    A project at Rutgers to build one of the most advanced electron microscopes in the world was praised by the White House Friday as an example of a federal stimulus project that is helping to transform the nation.

    Dr. Ronald P. Hart, of the Rutgers Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience, has recently been awarded a $1 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) Challenge Grant In Health Science Research from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for his project, “Genome-wide Chromatin Modification Targeting by Endogenous Small RNAs,” funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act 0f 2009.

    House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) headlined a Capitol Hill press conference on November 17 at which AAU, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and The Science Coalition announced the launch of ScienceWorksForUS, their joint initiative to inform the public of the benefits of the Recovery Act research investment. The focus of the project is a website (www.ScienceWorksForUS.org) that highlights Recovery Act-sponsored research in all 50 states. 

    Speaker Pelosi was joined at the press event by Representative Rush Holt (D-NJ), House Science and Technology Committee Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN), and Representatives Ed Markey (D-MA) and Bill Foster (D-IL), as well as University of Arizona President Robert Shelton. Also participating were University of Pennsylvania Vice Provost for Research Steven Fluharty, Rutgers Vice President for Research Michael Pazzani, Ohio State Vice President for Research Caroline C. Whitacre, and researchers from Princeton and Johns Hopkins.

    Dr. Linda M. Brzustowicz, professor of Genetics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-New Brunswick, has been awarded a research grant from the National Institutes of Health’s Challenge Grant Program for her proposal, “Behavioral and Genetic Biomarker Development for Autism and Related Disorders,” to study behavioral and genetic components of autism.

    Dr. Eileen White, Professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-New Brunswick, and Associate Director of Basic Science at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, has been awarded a research grant from the National Institutes of Health’s Challenge Grant Program for her proposal “Role of Tumor and Stromal Cell Metabolism in Stress Adaptation and Progression”.

    Dr. Danielle E. McCarthy, assistant professor of Psychology at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-New Brunswick, has been awarded a research grant from the National Institutes of Health’s Challenge Grant Program for her proposal, “Phenotypic Markers for Smoking Cessation: Impulsive Choice and Impulsive Action,” to study impulsive decision-making and impulsive behavior as markers of difficulty quitting smoking.

  10. Rutgers Institute for Women and Art awarded ARRA grant by NEA | September 20, 2009, 7:52 am

    Rutgers Institute for Women and Art has received an ARRA grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The ARRA funding was awarded to the Institute for Women and Art in support of salaries. The ARRA award will retain one full-time position and then two part-time staff jobs will also be created to support the activities of the institute.

  11. Dr. Mark Gluck of Rutgers Newark receives ARRA student supplement | September 17, 2009, 1:05 pm

    In his NINDS-funded research grant, "Feedback learning and L-dopa in Parkinson's disease", Professor Mark Gluck has been studying how medications for Parkinson's disease can alter patients ability to learn about the consequences of their choices. Gluck was awarded an ARRA student supplement to add two Rutgers-Newark undergraduate Honors College students to this project.

    Dr. Prosenjit Bagchi, associate professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department in the School of Engineering at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has recently been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) Award to develop high-fidelity computational models to study the motion of drug-carriers in blood, and the binding of these carriers to diseased cells.

  13. Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts receives recovery act award | July 1, 2009, 1:11 pm

    The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 recognizes that the nonprofit arts industry is an important sector of the economy. As part of this investment, the National Endowment for the Arts designed a plan to expedite distribution of critical funds for projects that focus on the preservation of jobs in the arts.

    Dr. Anant Madabhushi, Director of the Laboratory for Computational Imaging and Bioinformatics (LCIB), in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has recently received an administrative supplement to his parent National Institutes of Health R21 exploratory research grant for the early detection of prostatic adenocarcinoma (CAP).

  15. Rutgers First Recovery act grant: awarded to Nilgun Tumer | May 5, 2009, 9:29 am

    Professor Nilgun Tumer, of the Department of Plant Biology & Pathology and the Biotechnology Center for Agriculture and the Environment in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has recently received funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 through the National Institutes of Health.

In fiscal year 2010, more than $433.9 million of research at Rutgers was sponsored by the federal government, state government, corporations, and foundations, providing research experiences for undergraduates, support for graduate assistants and postdoctoral researchers, and bringing state–of–the–art equipment and facilities to our campuses.
